Today we are docked at Port Klang about an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur. We took a ship excursion called Highlights of Kuala Lumpur.
Our first stop was Tugu Negara (National Monument) located in Perdana Botanical Gardens. It is a bronze war memorial designed by American Felix de Weldon in the style of his Iwo Jima Memorial with seven soldiers hoisting the Malaysian flag. Here are pictures of the Tugu Negara and the Botanical Gardens.
Our next stop was Merdeka Square (Independence Square) where the union jack was replaced in 1907 by the Malaysian star, moon and stripes flag. Here is a picture of one corner of the square.
From here we walked to a spot with a view of Masjid Jamek Bandaraya. It is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers. Constructed in 1909 it is the city's oldest mosque. Here is a picture.
Our next stop was the Menara Kuala Lumpur. It is a 1,380 foot tall telecommunications tower - the world's 4th largest. Here are a few pictures.
Here is a view of the Petronas Twin Towers (the 1,453 foot headquarters of the national oil company) as seen from the KL Tower.
Tomorrow we will be in Penang, Malaysia...
