Day 66 - Halong Bay, Vietnam

Last night we over-nighted in Halong Bay.  The bridge between the two sections of the city was lit with changing colours throughout the night.  We has a great view from our port side balcony.  Here is a picture.

Today was our second day anchored off Halong Bay, Vietnam.  It was also the day of our complimentary Silversea Experience of the Junks of Halong Bay.  After breakfast we boarded our junk (sampan) for a cruise among the fragmented limestone outcroppings, sheer cliffs, huge rock arches and tranquil coves.  Some of the rock formations rise from the sea to a height of 900 feet.  This is one of Vietnam's most celebrated attractions and has been designated a World Heritage site.  According to the guide on board, there are about 2,000 boats trips per day in this magical place.  Here are some pictures.

This is what our junk (sampan) looked like.

Here is a picture of my strawberry bellini, throughly enjoyed as we cruised this awesome wonderland.

Here are pictures of the landscapes.

Here is a floating village situated at a fish farm.  About 18 families live here.

This is a picture of the rock formation that is the symbol for Halong Bay.  It apparently looks like a rooster and chicken kissing.

We got back to the ship around 11:30 am - about 3 hours after our departure.  The weather is cool here and everyone wore jackets.

We had lunch in The Restaurant.  I had a delicious dish called Nasi Goreng - an Indonesian rice dish with pork chunks, a fried egg, chicken satehs, shrimp crackers and peanut sauce.  Myster had a cauliflower cream soup and slow-roasted goose.

This afternoon we will attend a destination lecture on Ho Chi Minh City by Jon Fleming.

Tomorrow is a sea day.....
