Today was our second day in Cairns, Australia. Still hot and steamy! After breakfast we slathered on sunscreen, put on our hats and struck out to find Rusty's Market. Once again we had barely gone two blocks from the ship before we were bathed in sweat. At all the traffic lights we would dart out to push the pedestrian crossing button and then scoot back into the shade to wait for the green light.
Eventually we got to the Market. Many stalls of produce, clothing, jewelry and souvenirs. We spent about a half hour there and then struck out on our next mission - to find the fruit bats.
On the drive to the Skyrail yesterday the bus driver had pointed to trees lining the road and called our attention to what appeared to be ragged bits of black cloth hanging from the branches. They were fruit bats! Here is a picture.
Mission accomplished we made our way back to the ship to cool off. We then went to the pool deck for lunch. It was deserted! Serving staff were idling with no passengers to wait on. We enjoyed a very quiet meal and sipped our cocktails.
We had dinner with a Cruise Critic contact and his wife. Wonderful evening!
We sailed out of Cairns around 8:30 pm heading for Thursday Island.
Tomorrow is a sea day.....
